JGRE Snapshots In and Around Atlanta: continued
While
getting treatment at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in
Houston, Dana met a woman about her age that also was
battling cancer. Smith was experiencing significant
success with a new cancer-fighting drug, but it was
unavailable to the woman because of her health insurance
and financial issues. Dana was determined to help others
in their battle, so she and her family established the
foundation in 2006,
under the auspices of the Piedmont Hospital Foundation,
to
assist those in their fight against cancer to help pay
for basic bills
such as rent and utilities.
The golf tournament has been a key
fundraising event for the foundation for the past three
years, and JGRE was excited to participate this year and
help the foundation reach its $20,000 event goal.
Since its inception, fundraisers for the
Dana G. Smith Foundation have been working to diligently
towards a $500,000 endowment goal that would allow the
charity to be self-sustaining. JGRE was excited to hear
the news that this critical goal was reached after this
year’s Golf Tournament. The Fund’s Facebook page
reported: On
Saturday, May 7 - almost exactly 10 years after Dana
Smith started the Dana G. Smith Cancer Assistance Fund
at Piedmont Hospital - we are beyond thrilled to
announce that we have hit our $500,000 Endowment goal!
Thanks to the support and love from all of our
contributors, we have been able to raise over $750,000
and help over 400 cancer patients at Piedmont with their
basic daily needs. Research is important, but what
cancer patients really need NOW is help with bills,
transportation, things insurance won't cover but are
still key to recovery. We are so proud and honored to
know that this Fund will live on indefinitely thanks to
this Endowment. What a testament to the selfless and
generous spirit of our sweet founder, Dana. She may be
gone from this earth, but her spirit and legacy will
live on forever.
